Cranberries have long been used to support urinary tract health, and the proanthocyanidin (PAC) compounds in cranberries make harder for bacteria to adhere to urinary tract tissues. PACran® is a potent cranberry extract with the highest proanthocyanidin (PAC) levels available. A recent study showed that North American cranberry A-link PACs are the only PACs known that provide bacterial anti-adhesion activity.

Easy come, easy go…

The urinary tract is an important bodily system, but it rarely gets the credit it deserves. It begins in the kidneys, with millions of tiny filters called nephrons, that filter 30-50 gallons of blood every day. The kidneys eliminate excess fluid, metabolites, unused vitamins and minerals, drugs, and other chemical wastes from the bloodstream, draining through the ureters into the bladder, which is controlled by sphincter muscles, and finally through the urethra and out of the body.

The urinary tract is normally a sterile environment, free of bacteria, viruses, and fungi. However, at times certain bacteria (most commonly E. coli) can enter the urinary tract via the urethra, attach to the tissues, and multiply, causing urinary tract infections. Urinary tract infections are the second most common kind of infection in the body (after the common cold) and account for about 8.3 million doctor visits per year! Urinary tract infections can cause scar tissue, which can help subsequent reinfections get an easier foothold. Other problems may occur within the kidneys and urinary tract, such as kidney stones. Any abnormality that obstructs the normal flow of urine creates a possible environment for infection.

Keeping the urinary tract clean and healthy requires regular bathing or showering, and protection from outside contaminants wherever possible. Eating a wholesome diet, and drinking plenty of good clean water on a daily basis, will also help to flush the urinary tract regularly. It is also best not to put off the urge to urinate until the bladder is completely full, because this can put these important organs under stress.
